Large migrational waves into and out of the country have always been part of Germany’s history. Nonetheless, the arrival of refugees in Germany in 2015 was perceived by many as an exceptional circumstance – even though it is just another example of migration being the norm, both then and now. At the same time, it raises questions about the topic of arriving in a new place. Combining film, music and acting creates a poetic narrative about arrival, both in the past and today. About waiting and hoping, projecting and belonging, and about the strategies people develop to feel as if they have truly arrived in what starts out as an alien environment. Since 2005, the Dresden collective shortfilmlivemusic has been developing documentary film concerts, for instance about the foreign guest workers invited to West and East Germany in the 1950s and ‘60s. In Survival Strategies for Cold Countries they work for the first time with the electronic musician Ephraim Wegner and the actor and author Fadi Mhawesch.
